Ing Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is a pretty decent choice if you need to work on a video project. It offers a number of visual effects, animations, annotations and audio-video mixing features like cutting a video or rotating a clip. So much that I have sometimes started with just a set of photos and ended up creating amazing videos out of them.

Now, let us consider a scenario – you are in the middle of a project and want to add an audio track to your work. However, you realize that you do not have an audio file of that track on your hard drive. Instead you have a video of the same. What would you do?

Two options you have. One, search on the internet and download/buy the audio version. Two, use a tool to rip and extract audio from the video stream that you already possess. Well, if you are using the latest version of Windows Movie Maker, you do not have to do either of these.

Windows 7 has a lot of extra features for handling your optical media like DVD Movie Maker and ISO Burner. However if you need something with a lot more power and options today we take a look at the free and well known burning utility ImgBurn. Just click the button 'import images and videos' to import your files into Windows Movie Maker project. Select target files and add to timeline Select the files which you want to add into your movie, then click the button 'Add to timeline'. Steps to Add Audio from Video File on Windows Movie Maker

The workaround for this is pretty simple. And it ends up saving you a lot of time and effort. Here are the steps:-

Step 1: I guess you are already in the middle of a project. If not, open Movie Maker and start one. Type Movie Maker on the Start Menu and open the tool.

Step 2: On the Home tab, click on Add Music (second section from the left) and click on the option Add Music option under Add music from PC.

Step 3: You will be directed to select a file from your computer via the Add Music window. On the bottom right of this window, change the file type selection option to All files.

Step 4: Without this change you will not be able to select any video file to add music. Now, navigate to the directory where your file is stored. Select that file and click on Open.

Note: Make sure that the format of the file that you select is supported and can be played by Windows media Player. If not, your extraction from video source would fail. Many popular file types like wmv, avi, flv, mkv, mov, m4v and vob are supported. You may want to drive a test for others or consider conversion techniques.

Step 5: The audio import may take some time based on the size of the file and that of the project. Apart from being patient, there is no Step 5. 😛

Once it is done, all Music Tools options would open up. You may now continue with your creative work and make it more interesting.

Conclusion

I hope this makes it simpler for you to add audio to a movie project right from a video source. I have tried it many times and it works absolutely flawlessly. Share your experiences on this. And also share the tricks that you may know. It can be really helpful for us and our readers.

Warning: If you are planning to use the video for a commercial purpose, you should ensure that there’s no copyright violation, and you should only add the audio if the license allows you to do so.

Windows Movie Maker is an excellent tool to work on videos and the best part is that it’s free! Obviously, you can’t compare it to the advanced tools like Sony Vegas or Adobe Movie Maker but if you are looking for some basic, in fact more than just basic video editing then Windows Movie Maker will not disappoint you.

Previously we have discussed how you can quickly create a movie from your photos using the Movie Maker tool and today I will tell you another out of the box idea that you can use the movie maker for: using it as a video cutter.

So lets see how you can use the Movie Maker as a video cutter to cut out a segment from any video. You know that movie scene you always want to play repeatedly or that part of the speech in a talk. Better to separate them in a separate video file so that you could play and share them easily no?

Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary video codecs installed on your system. If you don’t have them, then I recommend you to install K-Lite media codecs before you continue any further.

Here we go.

Step 1: Launch Windows Movie Maker and click on Click here to browse for videos and photos to browse and add the video you want to cut. You can also drag and drop your video to add it.

Step 2: Once you have added your video, wait for the Movie Maker to analyze it. After your video is analyzed you will see its frame on the right hand side time line.

Step 3: Now navigate to the specific frame of the video you want to make the starting point. You can use either the video timeline or the preview player.

Step 4: When the navigation bar is on the specific frame right click on it and select the option Set Start Point. Now repeat the same to set the End Point of the video from the context menu.

Step 5: Now preview your video to make sure you have cropped it as per your needs. Once you are sure, save the video using the option Save Movie located in the main menu.

Wait for the Movie Maker to render your video and save it on your hard disk. You can even upload the video on YouTube or send it to your friends via email.

I use the above trick to extract music videos from my ripped DVD’s. The question is, how are you gonna make use of the above trick? Tell us in the comments!
